How to Use an AED Machine: Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a medical device used to assist someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.

Step 1: Assess the Situation

Before using an AED, check if the person is unresponsive and not breathing or only gasping. Call 999 or ask someone to call for emergency help.

Step 2: Turn on the AED

Most AEDs have a power button. Press it to turn on the device. Some models turn on automatically when you open the lid.

Step 3: Expose the Chest and Attach Pads

  • Remove any clothing covering the chest.
  • If the chest is wet, dry it off. If the person has a lot of chest hair, quickly shave the area (some AED kits include razors).
  • Peel off the backing from the electrode pads and place them on the bare chest as shown on the AED instructions:
    • One pad on the upper right chest, just below the collarbone.
    • The other pad on the lower left side of the chest, below the armpit.

Step 4: Let the AED Analyse the Heart Rhythm

The AED will automatically analyse the heart rhythm. Do not touch the person during this process to avoid interference.

Step 5: Deliver the Shock if Advised

  • If the AED determines a shock is needed, it will instruct you to press the shock button.
  • Ensure no one is touching the person before delivering the shock.
  • Press the button to administer the shock.

Step 6: Perform CPR if Needed

  • If no shock is advised, or after delivering the shock, start chest compressions and rescue breaths (CPR) if trained.
  • Continue following the AED’s prompts until medical professionals arrive.

Important Tips:

✔ Stay calm and follow the AED’s voice instructions.
✔ Only use an AED on an unresponsive person with no normal breathing.
✔ If available, use child-sized pads for children under 8 years old.
