DEFIBRILLATOR MACHINE VS AED: UNDERSTANDING THE LIFE-SAVING TECHNOLOGY

Perhaps the single most valuable lesson learned in CERT Academy’s response to emergencies is how to employ a defibrillator machine—a lifesaving instrument in the war against sudden cardiac arrest. Defibrillators, however, are not created equal. Figuring out the difference between an ordinary defibrillator machine and an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) might be the distinction between life or death in the event of an emergency.

A defibrillator machine is any device used to provide a controlled electric shock to the heart for the purpose of returning normal rhythm. They are usually present in hospitals or being transported around in ambulances by trained health care professionals. They require manual control and greater skill levels, and therefore they are appropriately suited for use in the clinic.

By contrast, an AED is a defibrillator device specifically designed to be easy for anyone to operate. AEDs are easy to use and provide voice prompts and visual cues that guide a person in taking each step. We emphasize AED training at CERT Academy and instruct our courses in such a manner that even ordinary people feel empowered enough to act properly in the event of cardiac emergencies.

The bottom line? While all AEDs are defibrillators, not all defibrillator machines are AEDs. It depends on setting and user. For community preparedness, the AED is the ideal solution. Whether you’re training through CERT Academy or updating your workplace emergency equipment, becoming proficient in using a defibrillator machine, especially an AED, can make you a true first responder.
