Important consideration when using AED?

When using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), there are certain things you should remove to ensure the safety of the person in need of assistance and the effectiveness of the AED. Here are some important considerations.
- Firstly, need to remove an obstacle. Ensure that the person is lying on a dry and firm surface. Remove any wet clothing or water from the chest area. Clear the area of any metal objects, as they can interfere with the AED’s operation.
- Secondly, remove the excess hairy chest. If the person has a very hairy chest, you may need to remove or trim excessive chest hair to ensure good contact between the AED pads and the skin.
- Third, remove any conductive materials. For example, make sure the person is not in direct contact with conductive materials, such as metal surfaces, water, or conductive fluids. These can interfere with the delivery of the electrical shock.
- Next, remove all the jewelleries. Remove any jewellery or metal accessories from the chest area, as they can interfere with the proper contact of the AED pads.
- Then, ensure that no one is touching the patient. Ensure that no one is in physical contact with the person while the AED is analysing or delivering a shock. This includes making sure that no one is touching the person or the bed.
Do follow and AED instructions carefully. Most importantly, follow the instructions provided by the AED. The device will guide you through the process, including when to analyses, when to deliver a shock, and when to perform CPR.
