Do we need to use AED or do CPR first in case of emergency?
The priority in an emergency situation where someone is unresponsive and not breathing is to initiate CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) as quickly as possible. CPR helps maintain some blood flow to vital organs and provides oxygen until more advanced medical help arrives.
However, if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available, it should be used as soon as possible in conjunction with CPR. AEDs are designed to quickly analyse the heart rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electric shock to restore a normal heartbeat. Early defibrillation is crucial for increasing the chances of survival in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.
In summary, the general sequence of actions is to:
- Check for responsiveness: If the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, or only gasping, it’s an emergency.
- Call for help: Dial your local emergency number 999 and request an ambulance.
- Start CPR: Begin chest compressions. Push hard and fast in the centre of the chest.
- Use an AED: If an AED is available, turn it on and follow the prompts. The AED will provide instructions on when to stop compressions and deliver a shock if necessary.
The key is to initiate CPR as quickly as possible and, if an AED is available, use it without delaying chest compressions. Early and coordinated use of CPR and AED can significantly improve the chances of survival in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.
