Automated External Defibrillator’s (AED) Safety Tips

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) can be life-saving devices when used correctly. Here are some safety tips for using an AED:
- Assess the Scene: Ensure the area is safe for both you and the victim. Check for water or other hazards that could affect the safety of using the AED.
- Call for Help: If available, ask someone to call emergency services while you attend to the victim and prepare the AED.
- Follow Instructions: AEDs are designed to be user-friendly. Follow the visual and audio prompts provided by the device. They will guide you through the process step by step.
- Check for Compatibility: Ensure the AED is compatible with the victim. Do not use an AED on someone who does not need it (e.g., someone who is breathing or has a pulse).
- Prepare the Victim: Ensure the victim is lying on a dry surface. Remove any clothing from the chest area to expose the skin. If there are any medication patches, remove them before placing the AED pads.
- Apply the Pads Properly: Place the pads according to the diagram or instructions on the AED. One pad should go on the upper right side of the chest, just below the collarbone, and the other on the left side of the chest, just below the armpit.
- Clear the Victim: Make sure no one is touching the victim when the AED analyzes or delivers the shock. Stand clear and ensure everyone else is clear of the victim.
- Follow AED Prompts: Let the AED analyze the victim’s heart rhythm. If advised, deliver the shock by following the device’s instructions.
- Perform CPR as Necessary: After delivering a shock, or if the AED advises, perform CPR according to guidelines until emergency medical services arrive.
- Stay with the Victim: Continue to monitor the victim and follow any further instructions from the AED or emergency services until help arrives.
Remember, quick action is crucial in a cardiac emergency. AEDs are designed to be used by anyone, and they provide clear instructions. If you’re uncertain or uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to use the AED; it can make a significant difference in saving a life.
