How to Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)?

In emergencies, particularly during sudden cardiac arrest, understanding how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can be a life-saving skill. AED machine are designed to be user-friendly, allowing individuals with minimal or no medical training to provide timely assistance. Here’s a simple guide on how to use an AED:

Assess the Situation:
Ensure the safety of both the rescuer and the victim. Check for responsiveness by tapping the person and shouting for a response.

Activate Emergency Services:
If the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, immediately call for emergency medical services (EMS) or instruct someone nearby to do so.

Locate and Turn On the AED:
Check for the presence of an AED nearby. These devices are commonly found in public spaces.
Turn on the AED by pressing the power button.

Follow Voice and Visual Prompts:
AEDs provide clear voice and visual prompts to guide users through the process. Listen carefully to the instructions and follow the visual cues displayed on the device.

Apply AED Pads:
Remove any clothing from the chest, and ensure the chest is dry. Attach the AED pads to the designated locations on the person’s chest as shown in the visual prompts.

Analyse Heart Rhythm:
Allow the AED to analyse the person’s heart rhythm. Ensure that no one is touching the person during this process.

If Shock is Advised:
If the AED advises a shock, make sure everyone is clear of the person. Press the shock button as directed by the AED.

Perform CPR as Instructed:
If the AED advises CPR, follow the provided instructions for chest compressions. Continue CPR until the AED reanalyses or until emergency medical personnel arrive.

Wait for Emergency Personnel:
Even after the AED is used, it is crucial to wait for professional medical assistance.

Stay Calm and Reassure:
While waiting for help, remain calm and reassure the person if they regain consciousness.
