How to Read a Pulse Oximeter to detect Covid-19
What is Pulse Oximeter?
Pulse Oximeter is a device that can be use to check the oxygen level on your blood. It can help to estimate your oxygen level (or oxygen saturation, spo2) and it will show the reading at the display screen. During COVID-19 outbreak it is a good idea to keep a pulse oximeter at your home. So, why you should have a Pulse Oximeter at home? and how to read a Pulse Oximeter?
Why you should have a Pulse Oximeter at home?
At normal cases, low Spo2 can cause symptoms such as fatigue or shortness of breath. If you caught COVID-19 and under home quarantine your doctor will advise you to monitor your oxygen level. You may not have symptom from a low oxygen level. If you have a pulse oximeter this can help you to know when you need a medical help even if you don’t have symptoms.
How to use Pulse Oximeter?
Step 1: Remove any nail polish and warm your hand if it is cold.
Step 2: Rest for at least 5 minutes before taking your measurement.
Step 3: Rest your hand on your chest at heart level and hold it still.
Step 4: Switch on the oximeter and place it on your middle finger or index finger.
Step 5: The reading takes time to steady, keep the oximeter in place for at least a minute or longer if the reading is not stable.
Step 6: Record the highest result once it has not changed for 5 seconds.
Step 7: identify each reading carefully.
Step 8: Start recording from baseline and record 3 times a day at the same time. Take extra measure if you feel a change in your health.
Call your doctor if:
- Your blood oxygen level (Spo2) reading is less than 95%. This is true even if the number only drops when you are active.
- Monitor closely for changes in your health and contact your doctor if you starts develop symptoms or your symptom is getting worse.
