Protect Pets from Covid-19, and Infected Symptoms

Pets and Covid-19

Do you have pets at home? Can you transfer the disease to your pets if you are infected? How to know if your pets are infected? What will happen to your pets if they got infected? What you can do to protect pets from covid-19? Since we all know, most Malaysians already completed their doses, then what about the pets?

According to CDC, only a small number of pets like cats and dogs got infected by covid-19 mostly after they have been in contact with a positive person. Regardless, the potential of that disease to be spread from the pets to their owner or any human being is very low compares to the potential of that virus to be transferred to pets from the owner. So, if you think your pets get infected because of you, yes, it is possible.

What you can do to protect them from covid-19?

  • The pet s owner and everyone in the household should get vaccinated
  • Do not allow your pets to have contact with an unvaccinated person outside the house
  • Avoid touching, kissing, snuggling, hugging, sleeping with your pets if you are infected, quarantine yourself
  • Ask other people to look for your pets while you are in quarantine
  • Wear a mask and wash hands if you have no other choice but to care for them during quarantine

Plus, do not clean or rub the pets with any disinfectant chemicals, alcohol, or hand sanitizer, there is still no evidence that the virus can be transmitted by touching their fur or skin. Do not put masks on them too.

What to do if you think your pets get infected by virus that may cause covid-19?

Firstly, most cases have shown that the animals with the virus may have or may not have any symptoms.  they only show mild symptoms and will be fully recovered. Even so, some of the symptoms will be like a human as well:

  • Fever, coughing, lethargy, shortness of breath, eye discharge, runny nose, sneezing

If you have any concerns with your pets, contact your veterinarian, and please do not go to see the vet if you are infected, the infected pets also cannot be brought to the vet, they will usually offer other alternatives like telemedicine consultation.

  • Do not bring your pets to the park
  • Do not bring your pet to the groomer or daycare
  • Separate your pets from other pets
  • Wear gloves when you cleaning up after the pets, wash your hands with soap regularly
  • Provide bedding, bowls or containers, treats, and toys that are separate from those used by other people or animals in the household.
  • Disinfect bowls, toys, and other animal care items and rinse thoroughly with clean water afterward.
  • Soft items like towels, blankets, and other bedding, can be safely laundered and reused. Dirty laundry that has been in contact with an ill animal can be washed with other items.

There you go, not only do we need to care for ourselves but also our loved ones, take care earthlings!!
